Northern Rail’s area operations manager Paul Lyon is celebrating after being named Rail Person of the Year at the RailStaff Awards 2008.

Paul beat off stiff competition to scoop the title at the annual awards ceremony, which celebrates the people who keep the UK rail industry moving.

Paul was nominated for his determination to always go the extra mile and his commitment to improving the service Northern delivers to its customers through working in partnership with Network Rail and other departments within the business.

After picking up his award Paul said: “It was a surprise but I’m delighted and would like to thank everyone who voted for me. It might be an individual award but it really reflects the support I get from the whole team at Northern and my family.”

Heidi Mottram, Managing Director, Northern Rail, said: “Paul is truly deserving of this title, he continues to seek new ways to improve the service we offer to our passengers. Our employees do a fantastic job and it is great to see that recognised.”

Paul received his award in front of hundreds of people from across the rail industry at the awards ceremony in Birmingham on Saturday 1 November.

He is responsible for all Northern services in the North-East of England, and leads a team of 240 people.

He joined the railway as a train driver in 1988, was promoted to driver team manager in 2003 and has been area operations manager for 18 months.

Paul is married with two sons and lives in Newcastle.
